Most GTM Engineer job postings read like a RevOps role with Clay bolted on. That misses the point. Here is what the role actually requires, what to pay, and when it makes more sense to outsource than hire.
What a GTM Engineer actually does
The GTM Engineer owns the infrastructure that generates pipeline. Not strategy. Not content. The systems: the Clay workflows that build and enrich lists, the sending infrastructure that delivers sequences, the CRM automation that routes leads, and the signal layer that tells the team when a prospect is in-market.
A week in this role looks like: rebuilding an enrichment waterfall because a data provider changed their coverage, setting up three new sending domains and warming them, debugging a Slack webhook that stopped routing warm replies, and writing two A/B sequence variants to test a new angle with a specific ICP segment.

And it is not a BDR or SDR role. The GTM Engineer builds the machine that makes BDRs more productive, or replaces the manual parts of what BDRs used to do. Confusing the two is how companies hire a BDR and wonder why they still don't have a repeatable outbound motion.
