Do You Need a GTM Engineer?

Your board said you need one. A podcast you half-listened to said the same. Maybe a competitor just posted a job req. The honest answer: probably not — at least not as a full-time hire. Here is how to think through it.

The real question

The question is not "do I need a GTM engineer?" The question is "do I need a working outbound pipeline that runs without manual effort?" If yes, you have four paths to that outcome. Hiring a GTM engineer full-time is one of them, and it is rarely the right first move.

What you are actually buying

You need the outbound motion but not the headcount

Do you have ICP clarity?

If no: Stop here. Fix this first before building any outbound motion.

Is outbound already working for you at some level?

If no: Build and test first. Agency or fractional is the right call.

Are you at Series B or later?

If no: Full-time hire is probably premature. Proven motion first.

Do you need the engineer embedded daily with the sales team?

If no: Agency or fractional works. Embedded daily work is the main reason to hire in-house.

Are you already spending $120K+/year on the outsourced version?

If no: Keep outsourcing. Full-time hire becomes cost-competitive at this level.
